When you are working for a firm, you are going to be looking at the various clients that the firm has. Sometimes you'll be working with a team on a project, and sometimes you'll be designing things on your own. You'll spend lots of time in meetings and doing various projects with other people who also work for the firm. This is going to be a lot of work for you, so sometimes you want to be sure that you are good at working with a team an doing many different projects at once. Also, you need to be good at doing things that others want, because when you are working for a firm, you aren't always going to be able to get everything that you want to get.
When you are doing freelance graphic design jobs, you'll be working on your own. This means that you can have complete control over your own clients and their work, and you can choose what you want to do for each of them. You'll get all of the money for the projects, and you'll be in total control over what happens and what does not happen with your projects. However, you won't have the help of the other workers to guide you, should you need assistance.
Many people who are doing graphic design jobs do a little bit of both. They might work with a firm for their steady paycheck and so that they have a job to rely on, and in their spare time they might do freelance graphic design jobs because they want to do other projects or they want to make a little more money. Either way, they'll be able to focus a lot of their energies on doing graphic design projects, and that is the best part of the job.
