What Do Interior Design Jobs Entail?

Most interior design jobs descriptions include the reading of blueprints, knowing what is and is not permissible by the fire department and one of the most important parts of the job is to make the office or home you are redesigning look spectacular. The largest part of an interior design jobs description is centered on decorating. Choosing all the fabrics, colors, artwork, and the right lighting to create the ambiance they are seeking is a job that requires some talent.

The placement of the furniture, the paintings, window treatments and all the other décor that makes a room stand out and say it has been professionally decorated is what the interior design person is after. They will meet with the client and find out what type of likes and dislikes they have when it comes to decorating. The first phase of their job is to find out what the client wants so they will be satisfied with the finished product. Also the budget is a big consideration.

When this has been established, their next step will be to plan what they are going to do to the room or rooms. They will have to get their design together along with projected costs and this will all go to the client for final approval before any work begins.

After the client has approved the design and the budget, the interior designer will need to decide upon the materials they need - fabrics, furniture, lighting, and flooring. When this step of the interior design is completed, the designer will decide how long they will require doing all the work that has been agreed upon. This is their timeline. The job may require meeting with a contractor as well if there are going to be any significant changes to the construction of the building or room being redecorated.

Another part of the interior designer’s job may be to work with assistants. They may have administrative work to do, especially if they own their business. There will be samples to order and reviews of purchases. There will be billing and the promotion aspect of their business as well.

There are also interior designers who may specialize in a particular area of interior design. There may be some who only do residential jobs. Or they may only do commercial design. Many specialties can be chosen instead of doing the whole room. There are interior lighting specialists and closet design. Some interior designers only do kitchens.

One of the fashionable designs that many interior designers are starting to learn about is green design. The choice of furniture and materials that are free of chemicals and are energy efficient are becoming increasingly more popular so the interior designer has to keep up with the trends.

The Education Required for Interior Design

The recommended education for starting interior design is normally a bachelor’s degree. There are two and three year programs, which are available as well. Interior designers may obtain a license in some states. The majority of training programs are available at colleges, universities, or professional schools of design. These programs usually consist of two to four year courses. This is one way an assistant to an interior designer gets started on their career. The graduates receive either a certificate or an associate degree.

There are twenty-three states that license interior designers. The eligibility is based on a combination of experience and education for a minimum of six years. Two years of the six must be in a postsecondary education, which naturally would be in design.

Earnings for Interior Designers

The median earnings for interior designers are approximately $42,260. The mid fifty percent earned anywhere between $31,830 and $57, 230, although the amount earned can be affected by the area of the country in which you live and the type of business with which you are employed.

The low ten percent of earnings for interior design was $24,270 while the highest was over $78,760. The larger cities are excellent areas for interior design jobs because there are more opportunities with businesses.
